Collaborative Effort by Elan and Politi Architecture
Our design approach for the City of Watertown Comprehensive Plan focuses on enhancing connectivity between people, the natural landscape, and the community. By fostering seamless integration across architectural and landscape elements, we aim to create a dynamic, vibrant urban environment. Here’s how we plan to achieve this:
Identifying Urban Patterns & Connectivity
We began by mapping key land use patterns, vehicle routes, and pedestrian pathways throughout the city. Understanding these patterns—along with the functional use of neighborhood businesses—allowed us to strategically position critical architectural and landscape components that enhance the overall design concept. The goal is to strengthen pedestrian accessibility, optimize vehicular flow, and create a cohesive, connected urban experience.
Architectural and Landscape Key Moves:
The Band Shelter: This multi-functional and modern structure will serve as a central gathering place for the community. Hosting music events, outdoor movies, and social gatherings, this space will foster a strong sense of community and encourage social interaction, making it a hub for residents and visitors alike.
Tech Buildings: These sustainable office buildings will frame scenic views of the river, defining both the river’s edge and the street. Designed to be eco-friendly and energy-efficient, these buildings will activate the neighborhood from 8 am to 8 pm, providing an economic boost and creating a lively, engaging atmosphere. By accommodating businesses and workers, the tech buildings will play a key role in developing a thriving, mixed-use community.
The Mound / Restaurant: This innovative architectural and engineering structure will offer several key benefits: noise reduction from nearby train activity, becoming a major neighborhood focal point, and providing seamless connections to other sites across the tracks. This development will enhance community interaction while improving urban soundscapes and accessibility.
